Fallujah Batttle Begun

From Yahoo News, the asault on Fallujah has begun.

PANEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - U.S. forces stormed into western districts of Fallujah early Monday, seizing the main city hospital and securing two key bridges over the Euphrates river in what appeared to be the first stage of the long-expected assault on the insurgent stronghold.

An AC-130 gunship raked the city with 40 mm cannon fire as explosions from U.S. artillery lit up the night sky. Intermittent artillery fire blasted southern neighborhoods of Fallujah, and orange fireballs from high explosive airbursts could be seen above the rooftops.

Hope they do it right this time and not go the diplomacy route. Hat tip Jay via IM of course.

Arafat Death Watch

From Haaretz, the news we’ve all been waiting for.

Former Palestinian prime minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), current Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia (Abu Ala) and Foreign Minister Nabil Sha’ath were due to leave for Paris on Sunday night, where they are expected to announce the death of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. Israeli sources believe the Palestinian leadership has accepted Arafat’s death.

Meanwhile, the rumors continue to fly. Don’t expect any announcement until Tuesday thou.

Sources in the defense establishment believe Tuesday will be the day on which the Palestinians will ask to disconnect Arafat from life support and announce his death.

Tuesday night marks Lailat al-Kader, the night Muslims believe God revealed the Koran to the prophet Mohammed. The death of the Palestinian leader on that day will, therefore, be symbolic.

Must be symbolic. Hat tip Lair who said, “I tol y’ll so” via IM. Now the interesting thing will be why he died? Got more info from DEBKAfile.

DEBKAfile’s Exclusive Sources: Libyan ruler Qaddafi determined to attend every stage of Arafat’s funeral ceremony - even if it entails landing at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport to an Israeli welcome. This would make him the first Arab leader to touch down in Israel in 25 years since Sadat’s epic peace pilgrimage.

Palestinian leaders Abbas and Qureia arriving in Paris Monday will fight off tight French timetable for Arafat’s removal: formal announcement of Arafat’s demise Tuesday night; funeral rite in Paris and departure for Cairo - Wednesday.

The Palestinian visitors will dig in their heels for Nov. 19 burial. Jericho is now mentioned as possible venue with coffin arriving through Jordan.

Arafat’s wife Suha will demand Abbas and Qureia sign documents drafted by her French lawyers guaranteeing her multimillion dollar inhitance and pension - as price for switching off life support systems.

Well, have to switch it off sometime as organ systems willl start to fail if he’s brain dead. Of course depending, could switch it off and he doesn’t die at the appointed time. Now the news is Suha doesn’t want them there, saying something along the lines of “They are trying to bury him alive.” Well how alive he is is debatable. She’s out for the money anyway.

Browser Wars

One of the nice things about Safari is that when I start to type in a title, it fills in the rest thus I know if I have used that title before or, in the case of the Carnival of the Cats, it fills in the words making it easier. That is balanced, unfortunately, by Safari’s totally screwing up WP’s Quick Tags. They have disabled them for Safari as a result. So I usually use Camino. Why not Firefox, it’s more Mac like in the buttons and stuff. Now if Firefox comes out with a skin that makes it more Mac like, I’d use it more for posting/editing as it has more features than Camino.

And I will be doing lots of editing cause Carnival of the Cats is here this week and the entries keep pouring in. Probably use the G5 cause unlike the iBook, it has forward delete on the keyboard. I do use both of them, lay on my bed with iMac G5 on the table to my left, iBook on my right except for now when it’s in my lap.
