Laying here half awake half asleep trying to decide what to do. Finally set on checking out Ivan the terrible and associated story on CNN quoting here.
With just a few hours to go before the Category 4 storm hits land, panic buying has made for some long lines in Kingston.
More than 1,000 shelters have been opened, and the head of the country’s Center for Disaster Preparedness, Barbara Carby, said up to 500,000 people could be asked to evacuate low-lying areas in the country of 2.7 million.
Ivan’s forecast path puts the storm over Jamaica by Friday night, and it is then expected to move toward the Cayman Islands and Cuba before possibly reaching the Florida Keys on Monday afternoon.
Jamaicans to prepare for “the worst-case scenario” as Ivan heads their way.
Hurricane season is an annual thing and it behooves people to stock up, be prepared. I remember as a child, soon as we got the warning, bringing anything capable of blowing around inside. Mom had a room in the cellar which was like a small grocery store with a whole wall of canned goods and a well stocked freezer. Always had a stock of kerosene lamps at the ready too. It was amusing that we were the only one prepared too. You’d think the neighbors would learn, but no, they didn’t. Note, we were sufficiently inland that evacuating wasn’t an issue.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 50 miles (85 km) from the center of the storm and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km), meaning Ivan will start impacting Jamaica by mid-morning.
Guessing I should turn on the news here to see how it blows.
By Thursday evening, the storm had lessened slightly in intensity, dropping from Category 5 to Category 4 after its winds decreased by about 10 mph. Mayfield said fluctuations are typical, and Ivan will retain much of its punch over the next three days.
Still dangerous thou I expect it to lose some steam when it passes over Jamaica and Cuba, Ivan’s likely targets. Irregardless of Category, if it hits Florida, it won’t be good. Guessing Florida is pretty soaked by now from Charley and Frances. Don’t need another hurricane.
