The New MP’s
Kinder, gentler, I think not. This article from WND blows a hole in that.
The pictures from Abu Ghraib of male Iraqi prisoners stripped naked, demeaned and sexually humiliated by female soldiers blows the lid off the theory of a kinder, gentler military.Furthermore, the general in charge of the 800th Military Police Brigade at the prison just happened to be the only female commander in the war zone.
Did Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski own up to her failure? Did she stand up and accept the blame and take her punishment like a … uh … man?
No, she took it like Janet Jackson. In other words, the naked men in these photos were the Iraqi equivalent of a “wardrobe malfunction.”
Let’s see, Muslim country where everyone knows men and women are kept separate. Men doctors don’t treat women and vs vs. Women are to be covered. Everyone knows that. How stupid does someone have to be to not know that? How insensitive does one have to be to not respect cultural differences? There is absolutely no excuse for it. None whatsoever. We are trying to free Iraq, going against cultural mores is a slap in the face against everything we are trying to do.
In her media interviews over the past week, Karpinski claimed she and other reservists were unfairly singled out for blame because they are considered “disposable.” She, in turn, singled out the military intelligence unit that controlled Cellblock 1A, where her soldiers guarded Iraqi detainees between interrogations. However, seven of her reservists were captured on film smiling and laughing as they humiliated the prisoners - and three of the seven were women.
A report issued by Maj. Gen. Antonio M. Taguba and made public by Seymour Hersh in the New Yorker Magazine, indicates that the military police at the prison under her command were influenced by or following orders from intelligence personnel, CIA officers or linguists working as government contractors - at least some of the time. From the photographs, it appears that the MPs had no problem with these activities and that much of the illegal activity was done on their own initiative.
I am aware our military has guarded enemies that were interrogated by intelligence ours/not ours. They did not treat the prisoners in an inhumane manner. Irregardless of what a person has done, one can feel compassion and treat them humanely. There is no excuse for it.
However, Gen. Taguba concluded that the solders under Karpinski were “poorly prepared and untrained” and that some of her administrative problems were “without precedent in my military career.”
Gee, ok, having done it myself, guarded both male and female prisoners, common sense dictated humane treatment. What these MP’s did was pure and simple sadism. I don’t claim any great amount of training although the Sheriff’s Department gave me more training than the Army. If any of them were in the corrections field in civilian life, they should have a clue. Course, from what I hear about our prisons, maybe they don’t care. In their rush to outdo Uday and Qusay, they ruined it for everyone. And at work, I got to see more pictures, front page stuff, absolutely horrifying. And you know cause it’s the U.S., it’s all the worse. We’re not supposed to treat people that way.
